“I’m sorry,” Ellie tells me the moment Karen steps out of the office. She wasn’t sure what was happening between her two employees, but at least she was kind enough to give us a moment. “I didn’t mean to…hurt you.”
“But you did,” I reply, trying to remain as calm as is possible.
“I know.” Sighing, she casts her gaze down. She runs her tongue over her parched lips, probably trying to figure out what she’s going to say next, but I just hold one hand up in the air and stop her.
“Liste, Ellie,” I start, breathing deeply so that I don’t lose my cool. “It happened, and there’s nothing we can do about it. What’s done…it’s done. I doubt we’ll ever going to become friends, but I’m a professional—I’ll work with you, and I won’t let our personal history get in the way.”
“Thank you,” she whispers meekly.
“That being said, I’m going to try and fix things with Peter,” I continue, more firmly now. I head toward the door and, right before leaving, I look back at Ellie one final time. “Just don’t get in the way and we’ll be fine.”
