“Karen, I…I…” Crap, I’m so screwed. Am I going to get fired the day after I just got promoted? Yeah, that would be the cherry on top of the cake. “My grandmother just died, Karen,” I finally manage to say, gritting my teeth to try and make the lie more palatable to myself. “I’m sorry I didn’t give you a heads-up, but I just got the news this morning.”
“Oh my God! How are you, Ashley?” She asks me, her pissed-off tone mellowing out in a fraction of a second…which, of course, just makes me feel even worse. “Were you close?”
“Yeah, we were,” I sigh. That’s not a lie—I used to be close with my grandmother. Except she died two years ago, not this morning. “She was like a mother to me.”
“I understand, really. I just lost my aunt Cherry two weeks ago, and it’s been tough.”
“Oh, Karen. I’m sorry to hear that.”
“Thank you. She was my guardian angel, you know? Paid for my college, helped me get my first job…so I know how this must feel, Ashley. Take as much time as you need. Losing someone is always hard.”
“Thank you…I really appreciate it,” I whisper, wishing for a deep hole I could be buried in to hide from the world.
I can’t believe I’m lying about this.
“Tell you what,” she continues, “I’ve been going to a great support group in downtown Manhattan. It’s a grief circle, and it has helped me a lot. Why don’t you come with me? The group is meeting tonight, and I think it’ll really help you.”
“I, huh…” I trail off, not knowing how to reply. I’ve just backed myself into a corner, haven’t I? There’s no way I can tell her ‘no’. “Text me the address. I’ll be there.”
“Good. I’ll see you there, Ashley.”
Great. Just great.
