“I’m so sorry, Karen,” I sigh, biting on the corner of my bottom lip. “I know I screwed up, but I’m having a terrible day.”
“What’s going on, Ashley? This was supposed to be your first day as Style Coordinator. You fought hard for this position, so what the hell happened that was so important you had to skip work today?”
God, here we go.
“I just broke up with my boyfriend,” I confess, the memories rushing back. “Yesterday, I got home and…he was cheating on me. I thought he was getting ready to propose, you know? But he was cheating on me. I’m sorry. I know I should’ve let you know I’d have to take a day.”
“God, Ashley,” she sighs, and I can mentally picture her shaking her head. “I get it. Things like that are hard. But you really shouldn’t let your personal life get in the way of work. I know that’s a cold-hearted thing to say, but you just got a big opportunity…I’d hate for you to waste it over a broken heart. There are a lot of men in this city that’d be happy to slip a ring on the finger of a successful and independent woman…but few will do it for a broke and depressed one. Do you get what I’m saying?”
“I do,” I whisper, not sure if her pep talk is supposed to leave me feeling more confident or just more depressed.
“Good. That being said…I’ve been there before, and I know how hard it is. Your new intern can handle most of the day’s tasks, so you just take the day. Come in tomorrow with your head held high, okay?”
“Will do,” I agree, running one hand through my hair as I take a deep breath. I got lucky this time, but Karen’s right… I can’t let a broken heart take over my life.
